Michigan has over 600 public libraries from which a number of sprouting seed libraries are emerging every year. Seed libraries are similar to basic libraries although the information is not contained in books but rather within each unique seed. Seed libraries also function like normal libraries giving you the ability to “check out” seeds of your choice for a growing season.

The MI Seed Library is a collection and collaboration of seed libraries located within Michigan to help provide you with reliable information about seed libraries, raising seeds, and saving seeds. For the gardener, seed libraries provide an economically savvy way to obtain seeds at low cost. Some seeds carry stories meant to share while other seeds are entirely unique and have adapted to a local climate over generations of planting. Even if you’re a curiosity seeker, seed libraries give you the opportunity to root yourself in the local community and learn more about growing your own food.
