The MI Seed Library Network was formed to facilitate communication and collaboration between seed libraries in Michigan and to provide themĀ  with reliable information about seed libraries, raising seeds, and saving seeds. For the gardener, seed libraries provide an economically savvy way to obtain seeds at low cost. Much like traditional libraries lend books, seed libraries allow community members to “check out” seeds for free at the beginning of the growing season, plant them, and ideally save and return a portion of the fresh seeds in the fall to keep the library self-sustaining. Some seeds carry stories meant to share while other seeds are entirely unique and have adapted to a local climate over generations of planting.
